MY DINNER PRAYER
Father, before I take the first morsel
Of this tastefully prepared dinner
Please, do remember the great mass of people,
Caught in the muddy maze of grinding poverty,
Who may have to go to bed on empty stomachs.
Remember, O Lord, the rural poor
Of the hills and hillocks of East Africa,
Going through a cobwebbed dark alley of drought
And the work-weary urban poor
Of the ghettos of African big cities
On night shifts in some runaway sweatshops.
Don't forget that scraggy homeless man
Who will have to scavenge for his dinner.
And forget not that peasant single mother
Whose Son may be lying in the cradle of hunger
Father, touch the heart of our low-down leaders
Who still want to hold Africa,
In the sleepy backwater of development.
Cause them to see the folly in their skewed vision.
Let them see the vanity in piling up wealth.
Give them the moral fibre to come down
From their omniscient, know-all high horse
And accept the task of taking Africa,
From the quicksand of conflict and famine,
To the solid rock of peace and prosperity.
Thank you Lord, for answering my prayer.
